Cataract Surgery Cedar Rapids | Dr. Edward HuDr. Hu has a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in neuroscience and physiology from the New York University School of Medicine. He obtained his Medical Degree also from the New York University of Medicine and did a preliminary internship in internal medicine at the Flushing Hospital Medical Center in New York. Dr. Hu went on to complete an ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa where he served as the ophthalmology EMR task force resident representative.

Dr. Hu notes he had originally planned to pursue a career in academic neurosurgery, thus his MD/PhD path, but within his research he got to know many clinical ophthalmologists and they seemed very happy. When you pair that with the immediate gratification of helping to heal a primary sensory organ with patients who need it, and technology and precision of microsurgery, it really “sealed the deal” for him.

“I am thrilled to continue my work with an institution like Wolfe Eye Clinic, where they are so supportive of my passion in advancing the field of cataract surgery technologies and my surgical mission work. Not to mention giving me the opportunity to work with some of the highest quality clinical colleagues in the state”, said Dr. Hu.

Dr. Hu is a member of the Christian Ophthalmic Surgical Expedition Network Surgeon and has performed almost 900 cataract surgeries on multiple mission trips to Montemorelos, Mexico. In addition, Dr. Hu serves as a Board Member for the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology Alumni Council and the Editorial Board for the American Academy of Ophthalmology Young Ophthalmologist.

Dr. Hu has published numerous research articles and contributed to many research studies. He was the recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness Medical Student Eye Research Fellowship in 2002 and in 1999 the recipient from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology National Eye Institute Student Travel Award.

In his free time, you might find Dr. Hu spending time with his family, cooking, eating, fishing, gardening and raising tropical fish!
