DR. JAMES A. DAVISON – DES MOINES LASIK AND CATARACT SPECIALIST

James A. Davison, M.D., F.A.C.S. graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After receiving his medical degree from Mayo Medical School at Rochester in Rochester, Minnesota, Dr. Davison finished an ophthalmology internship at Los Angeles County – University of Southern California School of Medicine in Los Angeles, California. He completed an ophthalmology residency at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, finishing as chief resident. Dr. Davison is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Davison joined Wolfe Eye Clinic as the clinic’s sixth eye surgeon in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1980. Over his career, he and his partners grew Wolfe Eye Clinic from one clinic in central Iowa into the statewide organization it is today with twelve main locations, ten family vision centers, nearly fifty physicians and over 450 staff. Dr. Davison served as President and Chairman of Wolfe Eye Clinic’s Board of Directors from 1995-2010. He has been President of Wolfe Family Vision Center since 1996 and Wolfe Surgery Center since 2010 and has volunteered his services to Wolfe Foundation throughout his career. 

Soon after Dr. Davison joined Wolfe Eye Clinic, he started performing vitrectomies in 1981. As such, he performed anterior and posterior segment retina surgery until 1999, when he formally specialized in cataract and refractive surgery including LASIK laser eye surgery. Ophthalmology has always fascinated Dr. Davison. He considers the eye “nature’s most beautiful and fascinating organ” and the practice of ophthalmology “scientifically exciting” as it involves the use of advanced technology and surgical techniques. Dr. Davison enjoys getting to know his patients and helping to provide them with better vision so that they can live happier, healthier and more productive lives.

Dr. Davison’s passion for cataract and LASIK surgery expand outside of work. He considers clinical research, presentations and writing as some of his hobbies. When he is not pursuing his clinical passions, Dr. Davison loves helping his wife with their tree farm and visiting their children and grandchildren. He also enjoys golfing, fishing, boating and taking an occasional hike.

Outside of Wolfe Eye Clinic, Dr. Davison has been a fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1984 and has been nominated to the Best Doctors of America since 1994. He is a member of the Trusted LASIK Surgeons, American Medical Association, Iowa Medical Society, American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Ophthalmology, International Society of Refractive Surgery, Outpatient Surgery Society, Mayo Eye Alumni Association, Mayo Alumni Association, and Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Davison has greatly contributed to clinical ophthalmic literature, both as a writer and a reviewer. He has written or produced and published over 170 scientific articles, book chapters, and video segments, and co-edited textbooks on the cataract surgery technique, phacoemulsification, and the surgical rehabilitation of vision. Dr. Davison was a member of the editorial board for the Journal of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) from 1990 to 1995. He has continued as an active reviewer for ASCRS and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Refractive Surgery and Clinical Ophthalmology.

Dr. Davison also enjoys teaching others through lectures, presentations and live surgeries. He has served as a lecturer throughout the United States and abroad including Canada, France, Italy, Japan and Hong Kong. He particularly enjoys instructing about cataract and LASIK surgery techniques, technology and outcomes. Dr. Davison continues to present at seminars, conferences and meetings with organizations such as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and American Academy of Ophthalmology.
