DR. REID P. TURNER – IOWA CORNEA, LASIK AND CATARACT SPECIALIST

Reid P. Turner, M.D. is a board-certified and fellowship-trained corneal specialist. He is a Des Moines native who attended Central College on a Presidential Scholarship and was captain of the men’s golf team. He received his medical degree with distinction in teaching at the University of Iowa in 2012. Dr. Turner completed ophthalmology residency training at the Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, South Carolina where he served as chief resident and received the Valloton Award for Academic Excellence. Known as the largest ophthalmology department in the country, Dr. Turner completed a fellowship in corneal transplant and refractive surgery at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. During fellowship, he learned the most up-to-date surgical techniques for LASIK laser eye surgery and corneal transplants.

Dr. Turner has received numerous national academic and research awards, particularly on the subject of Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery. Helping to advance the medical field, Dr. Turner has also assisted in writing textbook chapters, developing a LASIK tutorial, creating an award-winning surgical video and presenting on a range of subjects including cataract and refractive surgery, Fuchs dystrophy and keratoconus.

In addition to academic work, Dr. Turner is a volunteer at heart. In 2017, as part of a medical mission trip, he performed corneal transplants to patients in need in Jerusalem, Israel. For three years he volunteered with Storm Eye Sight Free clinic, where he assisted in providing free eye exams to underserved populations in Charleston, South Carolina in addition to volunteering with Respectacle.org, a non-profit organization that provides free glasses to anyone in the world in need.

Dr. Turner decided to become a doctor after shadowing his family physician when he was a senior at Grandview Christian School. He found that medicine blended his intellectual curiosity and joy of working with people perfectly. Through volunteer work, he realized the impact improving someone’s vision could have on their quality of life and knew he wanted to become the meticulous, skilled ophthalmic surgeon he is today. . . Dr. Turner joined Wolfe Eye Clinic in 2018 and enjoys helping patients achieve their vision goals. Outside of his career, you might find Dr. Turner playing golf, eating BBQ, and spending time with his wife and three children.
