Samuel A. Whittier, MD is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract surgery, and the treatment of multiple eye diseases such as glaucoma, cornea, and various anterior segment disorders. Dr. Whittier graduated Summa Cum Laude with his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry at Weber State University, followed by his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Utah. He then relocated to Madison, Wisconsin, where he was awarded a position as a Retinal Imaging Fellow and Associate Research Specialist before completing an integrated Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Wisconsin. During his time in Madison, he cared for patients within the UW Health System, William Middeton VA Hospital, and American Family Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Whittier is passionate about global ophthalmology and improving access to care for the underserved and has additional training in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS). His experiences in India, working closely with colleagues at Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, are some of his most cherished experiences in medicine. He has conducted extensive research in the field of ophthalmology, including work on clinical trials, and has authored several publications and has presented at national and regional conferences. Above all, Dr. Whittier finds the greatest satisfaction educating patients regarding their eye conditions and working to achieve the best possible results clinically, surgically, and improving their quality of life through implementing compassionate and evidence-based eye care.
Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Amber, and their three boys, exploring the outdoors, playing sports, and traveling. Dr. Whittier joined Wolfe Eye Clinic in September 2025 and cares for patients in Ames and Ankeny.
